Our bar is named after one of the most successful golfers ever to work at the club.
Born in Surrey in 1882, George Sargent started in golf at the age of 12 at Epsom Downs, and later learned under the great Harry Vardon at Ganton. He made his name at the 1901 Open Championship at Muirfield, where he lay sixth after the first round. Soon afterwards he became the professional here at Dewsbury District.
He later crossed the Atlantic, first to Royal Ottawa in Canada, then to the United States. In 1909 he won the US Open at Englewood, New Jersey, setting a new tournament record of 290. He went on to win the 1912 Canadian Open, played in sixteen US Opens, and finished in the top ten six times.
George was a founding member of the PGA of America in 1916 and served as its president for five years. He was also one of the first coaches to film the golf swing to study it. He spent the rest of his career at leading American clubs, including East Lake in Atlanta, and is in the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame alongside his sons Harold and Jack.
Next time you’re in the bar, raise a glass to him.
